Welcome to the Spring 2021 Quilt Coat Along, hosted by Jessica Plunkett and myself! We are excited to bring together sewists to make one of the hottest fashion trends around – Quilt Coats.
We’d like to start by acknowledging that quilt coats are not a new thing, they were found all over the world being made by people of color and of all different cultures. Below I’ve included one from the International Quilt Museum and another from the Public Library Quilts page. We appreciate the beauty of both of these garments and are thankful for the rich history they lend to our current mainstream trend.

This is a low key sew along – while we have a relaxed six week schedule to try and keep you motivated, you are welcome to work at your own pace. Here are a few key details about the sew along if you’re interested in participating!
#QuiltCoatAlong – March 1 – April 9
6 week schedule
- Week 1&2 – Pick Materials, Pattern, Batting, Fabric, and/or Quilt Design (Check out Ben Millett’s Post on how to choose the right batting!)
- Week 3 – Cutting out Pattern, Pre-Washing Fabric
- Week 4 – Quilting Coat Pieces
- Week 5 – Assembling your Quilt Coat
- Week 6 – Finish up and a Quilt Coat Fashion Show
On Friday, April 9th, we’ll host a Quilt Coat Fashion Show on Instagram where you can share your coat and be eligible to win a Grand Prize from these generous sponsors: Aurifil, Blue Barn Quilt, Fat Quarter Shop, Hobbs Batting, Olfa, Oliso and prizes from the hosts – Tina and Jessica!
Other important notes:
1. There is no formal sign up for this QAL. Each week, be sure to check Instagram for posts, stories and IG Lives with Tina and Jessica as we review the goal for the week, answer questions and help cheerlead you while you work on your quilt coat! Follow the hashtag #quiltcoatalong
2. There is no specific pattern we’re using for the QAL. You are welcome to choose any coat pattern you like. We have a list of quilt coat patterns to consider in our resources section!
3. This QAL is open to anyone – whether you’ve made zero coats or 10 coats! Again, this is a low key sew along where we’re providing some resources, encouragement and community while you make a quilt coat!
4. There are no formal rules! Meaning, if you want to take an existing jacket and embellish it with a quilt block, if you want to make a quilt onesie or you want to use no batting in your jacket – all of those sound like amazing ideas and we fully support them!
