While we were at QuiltCon 2020….ahh a magical time, pre-pandemic the call for the latest mini quilt challenge was announced by Curated Quilts. I had signed up for an ice dying class with Anna Joyce and knew from previous workshops and classes that I needed a goal, remember I said I needed deadlines?
During the class I knew I wanted to create this color palette so I could make a quilt for this challenge. From what I knew at the time the pastel colors are interesting to hit with dye.
As you can see above, my initial scrap fabric was too dark and saturated. So a little more trial and error I came up with the piece below. This was exactly what I was shooting for the deep oranges, pastel blue and the warm peachy color. What I love mosted about the ice dyed fabric is the subtle movement you get in each piece.
George liked the fabric too. This is my sister’s dog George. He’s a corgi and he ‘flies’ like this often as he’s always bouncing! What is it about a flat piece of fabric they immediately want to stand on it!
So I had an idea in my head of what this mini quilt would look like. I use Visio pretty often so I am familiar with it. That is what I use to sketch out ideas that I have. Visio is nice because it has exact dimensions. It also allows you to use transparency and groups. I’m trying to learn procreate and inkscape.
Well you’ve seen the final product, it’s in Issue 12 of the Curated Quilts magazine. You can see it below !! The quilt is titled “Disintegration,” in honor of the nature of the pieces falling apart. Check out the Curated Quilts magazine, it’s full of great content.
